    Background

OpenDoc is a compound document component architecture. Designed initially to provide an object-oriented end-user environment, the concept of a compound document has evolved far beyond the original word processing focus. A compound document in this new environment has become analogous to a structured container tha allows a variety of functions or data (i.e., objects) developed for different purposes to appear as a united application. Apple announced that OpenDoc will be the mechanism for extending the Macintosh OS and is positioning OpenDoc/Cyberdog as a key element of its internet strategy.

Component Integration Laboratories, Inc. provides the technological specifications and foundation technology for developing and integrating component software through the OpenDoc architecture across various platforms. Currently, its membership includes, Apple, IBM, WordPerfect, Adobe, Lotus, Taligent, OMG and is now open to developer membership.

To join the OpenDoc related mailing lists send email to listproc@cilabs.org with help as the entire body content. The OpenDoc news group is comp.soft-sys.middleware.opendoc.

IBM is providing OpenDoc for <="http://www.opendoc.apple.com/press/praix.html">AIX, <="http://www.software.ibm.com/comdex/odrelease.html">OS/2 and <="http://www.opendoc.apple.com//press/prIBMwin.html">Windows.

OpenDoc is released for Macintosh and OS/2, with preliminary releases for AIX and Windows; AIX and Windows will be final in 12/96. Other variations of UNIX are being considered.
